2015

While storms might have surrounded the competitors at the 2015 HOKA ONE ONE Middle Distance Classic, one of the most exciting races of the night was the first heat of the men’s 1500 meters. HOKA ONE ONE’s Leo Manzano, 2012 Olympic silver medalist, battled with two-time Olympian Andrew Wheating in a total downpour. Breaking away from the pack, Manzano shifted into the next gear with 250m left and the pack following on his shoulder. Manzano turned it on down the stretch, but Wheating came storming back. Wheating’s move was too late, as Manzano crossed the line first in 3:38.96 with Wheating in second (3:39.56) in a race that saw nine men run 3:40 or faster.

2014

2014 was an all-out battle between 2012 Olympic 10,000m silver medalist Galen Rupp and Australia's Collis Birmingham in a thrilling men's 5000m. 2013 .US National 12K champion Aaron Braun led a pack of a dozen athletes through 3000m in 8:09.84. The lead pack dwindled to seven as Rupp made a move with 600 meters to go and shifted to the front of the pack. Rupp, Birmingham and Belgium’s Bashir Abdi were the only ones able to keep the pace with less than a lap remaining. With 150m to go, Birmingham charged to the outside of Rupp’s shoulder and closed to cross in 13:18.57. Rupp eased up slightly before the finish, crossing in 13:19.59.

2013

High schooler Mary Cain posted the most impressive performance of the meet, earning her USATF Athlete of the Week. The then-17 year-old from Bronxville, New York, destroyed Suzy Favor Hamilton's 1987 U.S. junior record of 4:09.10 with a heat-two victory in 4:04.62. Cain’s victories early in the 2013 season set her up for her record-breaking performance at Oxy, and solidified her breakout season en route to making the final of the women’s 1500m at the IAAF World Championships. She was named 2013 USATF Youth Athlete of the Year following her impressive 2013 season.

2012

The 2012 meet was an Olympic preview with a huge upset in store for the fans at Jack Kemp Stadium. Donn Cabral, then a student at Princeton, set a new American collegiate record in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase to win the second heat in 8:19.14. In breaking the former record (Weber State’s Farley Gerber’s mark of 8:19.27, set in 1984), Cabral shattered his previous personal best of 8:32.14 and led three other men under the Olympic “A” standard of 8:23.10, including future Olympic teammates Dan Huling (8:20.81) and Evan Jager (8:20.90).

2011

The first heat of the men’s 1500m was a near-Olympic preview with seven 2012 Olympians taking to the track in Los Angeles. It was Wheating who was victorious over future Olympic teammates Lopez Lomong, Nick Symmonds, Manzano, Jager, and Matt Tegenkamp, and New Zealand’s Nick Willis, taking the win in 3:36.46 to lead 10 men to the finish in under 3:39.

2010

Saucony’s Duane Solomon battled in the final heat of the men’s 800 meters in the 2010 Oxy High Performance meet. Solomon, coming off his third international team appearance at the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, went head-to-head against Santa Monica Track Club’s JJ Johnson and OTC Elite’s Tyler Mulder to go for the win in 1:46.48. Johnson was on Solomon’s heels to cross just behind the future 2012 Olympian in 1:46.53, while Mulder was just behind in 1:47.08.
